SEW A ZIPPERED PILLOW COVER
THE EASIEST WAY TO
Love washable pillow covers...but scared of installing a pillow zipper?
I was too! But I figured out how and it’s easier than you think; just try this tutorial for the total beginner!
If you can sew a straight line, you can totally do this!
Gather a pillow insert, a zipper, two pieces of fabric, and a zipper foot.
Cut two pieces of fabric to exact dimensions of pillow insert.
Lay out fabric, right sides facing in, lay zipper along bottom, pin where zipper starts and stops.
Use ½” seam allowance. Sew a straight stitch from bottom edge to pin, back stitching to start and stop stitch. Do on both sides.
Between pins, sew the longest stitch possible.
BASTING STITCH (so it's easy to remove later)
Iron seam open and center zipper on seam face down. Pin in place.
Put the zipper foot on the machine. Leave zipper closed.
Starting at the zipper bottom, sew a straight stitch up toward zipper pull.
At 1-2” from pull, stop sewing, keep the needle in the fabric, raise zipper foot, open zipper past needle, lower foot, and continue to zipper end.
Close zipper and repeat down the other side.
With a seam ripper, carefully undo that long stitch that you made along the zipper
With zipper open pin remaining sides (good sides facing in) and continue sewing around edges using 1/2 inch seam.
You did it! You just installed a zipper! GO YOU!
